Skill Surface is a coaching tool that works through conversation. Honest reflection is what makes it valuable, so we want to be upfront about what happens to what you share.

What we store

Nothing. Skill Surface has no user accounts, no database, and no server-side storage. We don't keep your conversations, and we can't access them after your session ends.

What happens during a conversation

Your messages are sent to Anthropic's Claude API to generate responses. This means Anthropic processes your conversation in order to provide the coaching interaction. Anthropic's API data policies apply to that processing – you can review them at anthropic.com/policies.

By default, Anthropic does not use API inputs or outputs to train its models.

What we track

We do not use analytics or tracking cookies on this site. We do not collect personal information, usage data, or device information.

What this means for you

When you close your browser tab, your conversation is gone from our side – because it was never on our side.
We have no way to retrieve, review, or share anything you've discussed.
The only party that processes your conversation data is Anthropic, under their own policies.

If this changes

If we add features like user accounts or conversation history in future, we'll update this statement before those features go live and make the changes clear. We won't retroactively change how existing conversations are handled.

About Skill Surface

The idea

Most people have more skills than they think. Not because they're being modest, but because the things they're best at have become invisible to them. The manager who instinctively de-escalates a tense meeting doesn't think of that as a skill. The teacher who adapts a lesson plan on the fly doesn't put "real-time curriculum design" on their CV. The tradesperson who mentors apprentices while hitting deadlines doesn't call that leadership.

Skill Surface exists to make those hidden skills visible.

How it works

Skill Surface is a conversational coaching tool. You talk about your work – a situation you handled, a challenge you're facing, a role you're preparing for – and the conversation helps you identify, reflect on, and develop the skills involved.

It's built on established skills frameworks and coaching models. But you don't need to know any of that to use it. You just need to be willing to think honestly about your work.

Who it's for

Anyone who works. Skill Surface is designed to be useful whether you're a software developer, an accountant, a teacher, a site manager, or a barista. Skills aren't confined to office jobs, and neither is this tool.

Who's behind it

Skill Surface is built by Dan Foster, a workplace learning consultant who kept noticing the same thing: people consistently undervalue the skills they use every day. This tool is an attempt to fix that – one conversation at a time.

Your Best Skill Probably Isn't on Your CV

If I asked you to list your top three skills right now, you'd probably reach for the obvious ones. The qualifications. The job title stuff. The things you were explicitly trained to do.

But what if you look below the surface?

The skills that make you most effective at work are often the ones you've stopped noticing. They've become so automatic that they don't feel like skills anymore – they just feel like "how I do things."

The invisibility problem

There's a well-documented pattern in skill development: the better you get at something, the less conscious effort it requires. That's a good thing – it's what lets an experienced nurse read a room while simultaneously managing a clinical task, or what lets a project manager sense a timeline slipping before the data confirms it.

But it creates a blind spot. When something feels effortless, we assume it's easy. And when we assume it's easy, we assume everyone can do it. So we don't name it, don't claim it, and definitely don't put it on a CV.

What this looks like in practice

A teacher I spoke to recently described how she adjusts her delivery mid-lesson based on how students are responding. She didn't frame it as a skill – she said "I just notice when they're lost." But what she's actually doing is real-time assessment, adaptive communication, and audience analysis. That's three distinct, valuable skills wrapped up in something she dismissed as obvious.

An accountancy manager described how he onboards new trainees by gradually increasing the complexity of what he delegates. He called it "common sense." It's actually structured mentoring using a progressive complexity model – something many managers never learn to do well.

Why it matters

If you can't see a skill, you can't develop it deliberately. You can't explain it in an interview. You can't teach it to someone else. And you can't make a case for why you deserve the role that depends on it.

The first step isn't learning something new. It's recognising what you already know.
